In my Catholic school, we were told that we had to wear navy or white socks and my form of rebellion was to wear one navy and one white sock for which I got sent to the principal. In the principal's office, I was forced to buy a pair of navy socks (they were very nice socks and reasonably priced. In fact, they became my favorite socks). So I really identified with Elizabeth's rebellion - or maybe I copied it?

Incidentally, in my edition of the book, the stockings vs socks issue was changed to white socks vs colored socks. I don't understand why. I mean, I know what stockings are. And there was no editing of the hairbrush-spanking. The only purpose I can think of is to fix the uniform issue you mentioned in an earlier post: I think it became a blue coat, etc., white socks and brown shoes which doesn't sound all that bad! No brown stockings here!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00014094514546232421noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5218460251150852982.post-67210079604775900222012-11-14T23:33:29.862+11:002012-11-14T23:33:29.862+11:00But she's not even trying!
